The Roman villas, the roads, the baths and the amphitheatres did not leave Britain. They tried of course, but the proto-EU customs barriers prevented such large objects being taken across the Channel. read more

To clarify, the ‘Romans’ didn’t leave Britain, but rather the central government in the form of senior leaders and the military left Britain to a form of self-government. With Rome fighting civil wars and then invasions from the Visigoths (including the siege of Rome itself), troops were removed from Britain and never really returned. read more
