Winston Churchill didn’t dislike the Irish but he did hate Irish nationalism. The idea of Ireland’s leaving either the United Kingdom or British Empire was anathema to him. In the end, he grudgingly accepted the former, but the latter was a step too far because it entailed disavowing allegiance to the king, a line that in his view must never be crossed. read more
Churchill subsequently helped negotiate the Treaty which ended the Irish War of Independence, but divided Ireland between North and South. Although this would no doubt make him a hate figure to some Irish nationalists, it would not be fair to blame Churchill for the division of Ireland.
