Why didn't Charlemagne's Empire last after his death?

His empire didn't last long after his death. By 843, the empire had split into three kimgdoms, and each one was ruled by a member of Charlemagne's family. Charlemagne achieved fame for consolidating the Frankish kingdom and then conquering Saxony in a bloody series of 18 battles, but after his death, his Holy Roman Empire passed to his son Louis the Pious.
