Since then, I’ve paid close attention and noticed that Americans in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and maybe even Illinois pronounce that diphthong very similarly to how how Canadians do in Ontario and Nova Scotia, and Americans ironically regard the Midwest as representative of Standard American speech. read more

You see, Canadians do pronounce “about” slightly differently than Americans. But American ears are so attuned to they way they pronounce it that the small difference in Canadian pronunciation is magnified and shifted slightly. read more
