In general, I think we believe using a paper towel or napkin Is more hygienic. You use it, and toss it in the trash. With a hankerchief, many tend to reuse, or store it in their pocket (eew!) where germs can spread. Anyway, that's just my thoughts as an American who does not use handkerchiefs. read more

:) We don’t use hankies in place of toilet paper, but there is a large community of people who use “family cloth,” which is basically reusable toilet paper. Similar to cloth diapers, some families will keep a stack of soft cloths near the toilet and a container for soiled ones, wash and sanitize them, then use again. read more
