Most Amish, at least those in Lancaster county PA where I live, do not go barefoot. The exception are the kids, who often spend much of the warmer months barefoot. I don't see that as any different from how I grew up, either in Brazil or in northern Virginia. We were all barefoot as often as possible. read more
The Amish still live that way, seeing sneakers or sandals as unnecessary when kids can go barefoot just as comfortably and more simply. As for the adults not going barefoot too, I'm not sure. I've wondered about that too. It may simply be that it is socially unacceptable for their men to go barefoot. read more
