Why they like to chase the ball/stick is the hunting instinct. The dogs instinct tells it something like: "It's running away! It must be prey. Kill it!" That's why you often see the dog shake the stick once it has it, that's what's left of the kill instinct. At some level the dog knows the stick isn't prey really, but it's just a game. read more
