Many of the packages go through Memphis because they have the technology/manpower to sort packages there to determine where they go. read more

There might not be enough packages going from San Francisco to Seattle to fill a plane, but if all the packages leaving SF go to Memphis then all like packages to Seattle get batched with packages from over cities going to Seattle.
