Flowering plants only need to be pollinated if you want them to set fruit/seed. Basically it's how plants mate. Some plants can “self”, which means pollen from that plant can fuse with the egg from that plant to produce seeds/fruit. Other plants are self-infertile, and require pollination from another plant. read more

Some flowering plants never need to be pollinated because they reproduce vegetatively, rather than by seeds. African violets are a good example. A new plant can be made just by rooting a leaf.
