An ocean sound in the ear can be normal; when you hold a shell against it you hear a whooshing sound which is the sound of the blood rushing around your ear echoing off the shell. If it is loud enough to be heard all the time it may be tinnitus, if you can only hear it when your environment is very quiet it may be normal for you. read more

If it comes and goes, it is most likely Pulsatile Tinnitus (like mine was, to the sound of my heartbeat). Tinnitus could be caused by one of many things, so it's best to go to your doctor or an ENT and get checked out first to rule out anything serious. read more
