Bioluminescence. The fireflies create a biochemical reaction. The enzyme luciferase acts on the luciferin, in the presence of magnesium ions, ATP, and oxygen to produce light. (see here for more: Firefly). After they die (or are squished), the reaction still continues until all the energy is used up in the reaction. read more
