Why do many stores accept yen in Hawaii?

Hawaii gets about 8 million tourists a year, most of whom visit Waikiki at some point and support the ABC stores. It's profitable enough to open up many stores to serve this market rather than leave heavily trafficked routes underserved and risk competitors. read more

But there are just some places that do not accept them and I end up using my Chase Freedom. I hope this thread will serve as a sounding board for places that do not accept American Express.
