My 12-year-old home computer was top-of-the-line in its day, and still runs rings around the laptops and most of the new desktops that are issued at work. Of course, that computer cost me $4000 to build. The new laptops only cost $600, and the new desktops run about $700. read more

A new computer that runs really slow could simply be a lemon. Before wasting a lot of time trying to come up with quick fixes or searching for problems, it might be worth it to simply return the computer to the store and try another one. Computers don't last forever, but they should serve you well for at least five years. read more
