Why do police use German Shepherds and not Rottweilers?

The primary breeds used for patrol work here in the United States are the German Shepherd (including such as the Belgian Shepherd) the Doberman Pincher, and the Rottweiler. Yes, some Rotts are used. In fact, I personally prefer Rotts myself, and have used them. read more

The reason why German Shepherds are the most commonly used police dog is due to the fact that they take to commands very well. Both of these dogs come from the background of herding, German Shepherds for sheep, and rottweilers for cattle. As such booth dogs need to be able to think on the spot and maneuver well. read more
