No, opossums know where they are. When they have babies they are the size of mice and they can ride on mama's back by holding onto her hair. A possum has no defense system. When they see you they will show you their teeth. If that doesn't scare you away, they become so afraid they faint. read more

I’ll guess that you mean Virginia opossum (the native North American species) in this question as many other possum species are fully arboreal and spend most of their lives in trees. Possums climb pretty well and the tail is prehensile, but despite the mythology around them they don’t sleep like this and only young Virginia opossums can really do this. read more

People could just move it off the trail with a stick, I would think, but many people seem to think if they’re in a wilderness area, even the trail is “wilderness” so poop clean-up is unnecessary. read more
