Why do professional baseball players spit constantly?

Spitting is as old as baseball. Back in the 1800s, chewing tobacco was common practice on and off the field. Players used it to stimulate their saliva on the dusty field and then use the spit to moisten their gloves. I cannot tell you why all baseball players spit constantly, but I can tell you why I do. As a little kid who played tons of baseball; on a town team and a travel team, sunflower seeds were a part of my diet. It is the go to snack for most baseball players, and I couldn't make it throughout the game if I didn't have a pack on me. read more
