Initially, it seems to have been an accident. The bike leg went in the middle because the bike course for the Around-Oahu Bike Race joined the location for the Waikiki Rough Water to the start of the Honolulu Marathon. I suppose they could have done it in the opposite order. read more

Keeping the swim leg open for the duration of the event if it was last would not only be costly but dangerous. I have had to rescue people at the beginning of the swim. The number of rescues would skyrocket if the swim was last. A few triathlons have mixed order; but, are usually in a pool setting which is much more controlled. read more

You don’t need a triathlon bike to do triathlons. Modified road bikes are very common in triathlons. If you already own a road bike or plan on doing other types of riding you may be better off with a road bike with clamp on aerobars. The advantages of a triathlon bike are in the positioning. read more
