It's because someone freaked out at worms etc. when we were kids. With my kids, I walked over to a praying mantis and picked it up and said "cool" and within a minute my kids wanted to hold it. I did have to let them know that some spiders and other things could bite so watch out but they seemed to follow my lead with the whole freaking out or not reaction. read more
