The other answers are accurate regarding the logic that throwing right-handed puts a fielder in a position to get rid of the ball faster at 3B, but the advantage is so minuscule as to really have no impact vs. how effective a lefty might be playing 3rd base, shortstop or even 2nd base. Although it would be a good trivia quesiton. Have there been any significant left handed third basemen in the majors. By significant I mean ones who started a fair amount of games in that postion, not someone who was placed there for a game. If so can you tell what year(s) they played. read more

If the throw from the outfield/cut off man is perfect, the catchers glove doesn't have to move or, at the very least the glove just has to be dropped slightly to tag the runner. Regardless of the throw, the left handed catcher would have to bring his glove across his body to apply the tag. read more

For a lefty, they'll catch the ball and then with the ball in their mitt on their right hand have much less range for tagging someone out coming down the third base line. If a lefty wanted to swipe tag someone, they'd pretty much have to turn their back to the field to get their glove-hand in the right spot, and this exposes them to getting blown up so badly. read more
