San Marino continued to exist during the Italian unification in the mid-19th century in part due to the fact that it harbored many people in support of the Italian Unification Movement. One of these, Giuseppe Garibaldi, led a nationalist revolution to unite the nation and while in exile, was granted citizenship and hospitality by the republic. read more
