Why does sea salt kill pathogens, but not good bacteria?

Depends on the circumstances. High concentrations of salt will kill many bacteria not adapted to such an environment. This is not selective against pathogens. Some pathogens survive well in sea water which is why sewage contamination of coastal waters used for bathing is a problem. read more

They are viruses that infect bacteria, and the oceans (salt-water) are full of them. I only really know a lot about one (1, n=1, a single, solitary one) virus, and it is one of these, and apparently quite durable in many environments. read more
