There are many possible reason why styro melts, but the two most likely are 1) Polar molecules 2) Steam Microwaves really only affect polar molecules, meaning, molecules that have a sort of north pole and south pole like a magnet. read more

Polystyrene doesn’t melt from the heat in the microwave though, it would melt from the heat of it’s contents warming up. Styrofoam is a type of plastic, and toxic chemicals may leach out of these products into the food that they contain especially when exposed to heat. read more
