In general, TEM has a higher resolution than SEM by a factor of 10 or more. The reason has to do with the way magnified images are formed in the two instruments. In a TEM, a nearly parallel beam of electrons travels through a thin specimen, and the resulting image is magnified electron-optically by a series of electromagnetic lenses, the main one of which is the objective lens. read more
