Why does the United States of America still need states?

Every nation needs administrative subdivisions. Britain has counties, France has departments, and so on. But the USA no longer needs semi-autonomous states with 50 different systems of criminal justice, 50 different education systems, 50 different insurance commissions, and all the rest of it. read more

The United States of America needs states for the same reason that we broke away from Britain, declined to institute monarchy and fought a Civil War.
