Why doesn't an airplane have a transmission system?

Best Answers

Most aeroplanes have an optimal cruise speed that they reach, then stay at. As such, their engine or jet doesn't have to constantly match speed with the ground at say, traffic lights, it can work at a single, optimal speed. Obviously, aeroplanes don't have powered wheels! read more

Aircraft engines don't have or need multiple gears because the engine doesn't move the aircraft from standstill by applying torque to wheels. Instead an aircraft engine can run at full RPM while the aircraft is stationary at the start of a runway. read more

If there was no transmission, the wheels would just spin out and you would have zero torque and therefore zero traction (think driving around in first gear in a speed range of 0–80. Would not work very well) A propeller wouldn’t be very useful on a car because a car operates at a much lower speed then an airplane does, and propellers are not very efficient at low speeds. read more
