Why doesn't Apple make its own chips for Macs?

Intel has so far kept advancing, but there are always rumors that Apple may make their own ARM chip. Now when we say Apple may make their own chip, we’re only talking about design, not actually manufacturing. Apple doesn’t have the chip-making facilities to do that at this time. That could always change, though. read more

Once it becomes cost-effective for Apple to develop their own CPUs for their computers, or once their mobile processors become powerful enough for their mid- and high-end devices, we'll see MacBooks and iMacs powered by the Apple A15 (or whatever it'll be called). read more

Creating chips for use in larger, more powerful Macs (iMacs and Mac Pros) is a bigger challenge, but one that Apple's engineers seem up to. This would herald a major shift on the software side, though. read more
