Why doesn't Canada celebrate independence day on April 17th?

Steven and Neil are quite right. Canada had a constitution since 1867. Technically the UK could have changed it unilaterally, but that never happened. The British North America act gave us sovereignty in everything except Foreign Policy. read more

April 17 was the day of the repatriation of the Constitution of Canada from Britain, which they never exercised anyway. July 1 was the day Canada was united for the first time and no longer became officially part of the British Empire (Although still heavily tied to them for decades). read more

They don’t call it independence day. On July 1st 1867, the four former colonies joined into a Confederation creating the Dominion of Canada. This was the founding of Canada. It wasn’t an “independence day” but rather a creation of a new nation that was responsible for its own governance. read more
