I believe Japan has nothing in particular against licorice. The candy in itself may not quite compare to the many versions of matcha-merchandice, but this is the way with a lot of places (not the matcha merchandice, but local varieties of candy being favoured over certain others). read more

Black licorice is actually licorice, the other colors are not. Although it is difficult to find licorice with actual licorice root in it anymore because eating too much licorice is not good for you. Modern, American black licorice substitutes Anise for the Licorice root. The taste is similar. read more
