The entire Eastern Seaboard is actually rising an inch or so every year (with the West Coast sinking about the same distance), so that's another reason it doesn't "sink". Besides, islands don't FLOAT - they are anchored to the bedrock beneath. It's just that in NYC's case that this bedrock is very close to the surface. read more

It does not mean that every island should sink. If it is an stable zones it will not sink. I went to Manhattan in the year 2006.It seems quite safe. read more
