It would be extremely expensive to build shelters and it wouldn’t be really justifiable as the whole “Soviets are going to nuke us all, build a backyard shelter” craze pretty much ended in the 60s. The U.S. also has a very diversely structured and distributed population. read more

That said, I know everyone doesn’t have the space to build a fallout shelter. In that case, it might be worth your while to track down one of those old fallout shelters and keep a go-bag in your car with two weeks worth of supplies. read more
