Why don't firefighters use sand instead of water?

There are two scenarios, with very different answers. For a small grease fire, limited to a pot or a stove top, sand would be a viable option. Except that then we would have to carry sand everywhere, and it frankly won't be useful for much else. Not a winning proposition. read more

When a Fire department has the capability, like a fire boat, they will use whatever body of water on which they are sitting to fight a fire; if it makes sense to use it as a water source. Otherwise it is a difficult thing to pull water from the ocean and take it to a fire that is out of shot from the ocean. read more
