I don't know where you got carry hundreds of people from. The largest Zeppelin ever built, the Graf Zeppelin, carried only 20 passengers, the Hindenberg carried only 13. They were an extremely inefficient mode of transportation, extremely dangerous, and extremely unreliable. read more
Airships were never a viable means of transportation. They are slow (which is not necessarily a big liability), incapable of flying in rough weather, hard to control, hard to park and store, and utterly at the mercy of strong winds. read more
