The short answer of it is that you cannot see a new moon at night. A new moon is not in the sky at night! It rises with the sun and sets with the sun. The closest you can get to "seeing" a new moon is a "waxing crescent" right after the sun sets, or a "waning crescent" right before the sun rises. A new Moon is just not visible, day or night, from the surface of the earth. The best photograph achieved is that I know of is a 14 hour old moon. The days after, or before, a new moon when the moon is seen as a crescent you can see the outline of the entire moon. read more
