Augustus married thrice, but only in the tradition of upwardly mobile Roman nobles, who coupled for political advantage. And he was also something of a hypocritical moralist, which people (and History) tend not to like. Julius Caesar was a dictator for life; Augustus was 'first,' the patron of the empire who held all the strings. This allowed him to rise above the senate in a way Gaius Julius hadn't been able to do, and the senate never regained its social influence after Augustus' reign. read more

Caesar was also a populist, or what was refereed to as a “populares” back in ancient Rome. This is the type of politician that jumps onto popular bandwagons and supports or introduces his own laws providing whatever it is that the people want. read more
