I like Gaskell a lot but in my view she doesn't write as elegantly or as economically as Austen. Nor is she as snarky / funny as Austen. Like Austen, Gaskell does have very good insights into human nature; I think her masterpiece, Wives and Daughters, is the best evidence of that, better than North and South. read more

Although Elizabeth Gaskell lived and wrote some 40-50 years after Jane Austen, Austen’s influence can clearly be seen in her writing. In the 1860’s, Austen’s novels were being republished and were perhaps more popular than ever. read more

Wives and Daughters is more akin to being penned by the friend of Jane Austen than Charlotte Bronte. It is without the gothic supernatural brooding harshness of the Bronte’s books.
