Simply because of basic economics, supply and demand. Platinum is more rare - but currently gold is in higher demand which is tightening up supply which is driving up prices. Platinum will eventually be more expensive than gold again - these cycles are normal over the long run. read more

Gold is more currently because of rarity of use. The more people stockpile (by people I mean countries, etc) the value will rise, esp. when folks get worried about paper monies. Also, funds buy precious minerals and gold is on the list. read more
