Interestingly, the Bay of Bengal lies to the south of Kolkata (plot kolkata on map of India to check this). Thus whatever little breeze can come, comes from south. Thus people try to live in a house which is south open or has a verandah in south. Secondly, the sea in front of Kolkata is a bay and not a sea. read more
