Why is King David 'baffled' in Hallelujah?

Since the lyrics are “the baffled king composing Hallelujah”, it conjures up a picture of David later in life, already crowned King of Israel, perhaps after putting down the rebellion of his own son Absalom and receiving the terrible news that his favorite son is dead, taking up the harp again, and playing it in the feeble hope that what once worked for his old nemesis Saul may now work for him. read more

No wonder David is"the baffled king" in Cohen's verse. Later in the same Psalm, David says"O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" (Psalm 8:9) - he is literally a"baffled king composing hallelujah" - he goes right from being baffled to praising God. read more
