Why is Pablo Escobar not called Pablo Gaviria?

In Colombia (and I believe it applies to all Hispanic world) we use a different name convention that the one you're probably used to. We're named using this structure: First Name, Second Name, First Lastname, Second Lastname. read more

In this case Escobar is the paternal surname and Gaviria is the Maternal one. People are sometimes only referred to as by their forename and paternal surname (so he is called Pablo Escobar because his paternal surname comes first), and the longer version is left for more formal matters.
