“Trash” rap music has always been around. It’s just that nearly everyone is accessible today through the means of the internet. Furthermore, drugs, money and woman do not constitute “garbage”. Their angles of these topics do. There is a total difference between glorifying drug culture, and portraying and detailing the realities of it. read more
But hip hop collective Jurassic 5 got it right in “What’s Golden”: “We’re not ballin’/or shot callin’/we take it back to the days of yes yallin’/we’re holdin’ onto what’s golden.” Hip hop in its purest form is golden, more valuable than any jewelry a misguided rapper could wear. Music is usually defined by instruments and singing, so while it does not quite fit into this category, maybe it could be called a form of poetry, since that is what rap is at its core. Rap is a form of art for sure as are all other genres, but I do not believe it quite fits in with other MUSIC persay. read more
