The outer (southern facing) side of the Colosseum suffered severe damage in the 14th Century because of an earthquake. This is why you see the inner walls create a full oval shape, but the outer walls do not. read more

The damage to the Colosseum in Rome is attributed to several factors including natural disasters. The structure survived fires, lightning and even some of the earthquakes in the 5th century.
