If the Louisiana Territory wasn’t part of the United States, there was no reason why the British might not take it over from Canada. The French were no longer in a position to defend it. The British having a colony to the north AND the west of the United States could not be allowed. read more
Essentially the conflict over whether the purchase of the Louisiana Territory was constitutional or not was the power of the President. Jefferson's own party believed in states' rights more than a strong national government, so this was a blow to them. read more
