Why is the Salton Sea saline?

The Salton Sea is beset by several serious problems. Because the Sea has no outlet, water is lost only through evaporation , leaving dissolved salts behind and graually raising salinity. The Sea's salinity has now reached 44 parts per thousand (ppt), about 25% higher than ocean water. read more

The 365 square mile lake is 240 feet below sea-level, and, it has no outlet. About 750,000 gallons per year evaporate, and leave salt behind. The run off from area farms has leached salt from soil and it drains into the 'Sea'. read more
