With Dracula’s popularity the Transylvania home-base seems to have stuck. While Dracula revved up the vampire craze, it was far from the first vampire tale. James Malcolm Rymer wrote a serires of Varney The Vampire tales in penny deadfuls [penny horror books] between 1845 and 1847. read more

Bram Stoker, an Irishman, wrote Dracula, based on Vlad Tepes and added his own details, such as the whole vampire and blood sucking aspect. He placed the story in Transylvania, which is why the region is associated with vampires. read more

1) Bram Stoker invented a vampire and then he looked for somebody to match its profile. He found this Romanian ruler Vlad Tepes aka Draculea (not Dracula) and a very beautiful Romanian land for the action to take place in (Ardeal aka Transylvania). He actually came to Transylvania to do some research in order to improve his character. read more
