Because it isn’t. Also, New York was originally settled by the Dutch (New York City was once New Amsterdam), and the states that are now New England were settled originally by the English. The English eventually won the colonies, so that’s probably where the misconception came from. read more

New York, East Jersey, and West Jersey were added later. But since they were far from New England's capital in Boston, they were hard to control and generally were never really considered part of New England. The Dominion of New England was broken up by William and Mary. read more
