Edwin Hubble showed us that the universe is expanding, which is fundamentally important to our understanding of cosmology. Without his discovery that galactic distance is correlated with red-shift, we wouldn’t understand the size of our universe and we wouldn’t know how to calculate distances to those galaxies (though there are a few alternative methods, red-shift is most reliable for the most distant objects). read more
