Las Vegas was an oasis. The name means “the meadows”. It lies in a valley east of the Spring Mountains, and rainfall on the mountains runs through subterranean aquifers and comes up as springs in the valley. read more

The original Las Vegas (The Meadows in Spanish) was a stop on the Mormon trail and was basically an oasis surrounding Las Vegas Springs. Las Vegas was originally a water stop on the road to California. In the 1930's they built Hoover dam and suddenly they had both water and power in the area.
