With all due respect, there are some errors in the previous three answers. One is that the Belmont Stakes, the last leg of the Triple Crown, is run over 1 1/2 miles not 2 miles. He won the Belmont by 31 lengths, not the 37 lengths mentioned. read more

Secretariat was amazingly fast at least for the triple crown races most especially the Belmont a grueling 2 mile race and the only race of 2 miles that an American thoroughbred will ever race. Plus that race comes at the end of the triple crown following the Derby and then the sprint race, the Preakness. read more
