It depended largely on where the Pharaoh was located and/or where he wanted his tomb to be. The earlier 6th dynasty Pharaohs built in Giza because that was the cultural center of their day. Later pharaohs built elsewhere for the same reasons. read more
Pyramids were built during the Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC) but these consisted of a mud brick core with a stone skin and are now mere piles of rubble. There are over 100 recorded pyramids in Egypt most of which belong to minor royalty or have no known owners. read more
Although most of the older pyramids were located in Lower Egypt, the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, site of many of the best known pyramids of the New Kingdom, was located near Thebes, on the west bank of the Nile. read more
