Why weren't there great civilizations built in Africa?

There were. Africa was littered with great "civilizations" (scholars no longer really use that term, so from here out I'm going to use societies). Sudan/Nubia built an Egyptian influence society that even at one point conquered Egypt (the 25th Dynasty). read more

Short list of a few: Aksum Kingdom[1] , Songhai Empire[2] , Oyo Empire[3] , Benin Empire[4] , and Kingdom of Mutapa[5] the builders of Great Zimbabwe[6] Edit: I should say that I don't know of any that had writing that weren't either in North Africa or had come about during or after the expansion of Islam into North, East and West Africa (Timbuktu was well know as a center of knowledge after all). read more
